Happy Birthday Rose!☆
Wednesday, August 29, 2012 * Wednesday, August 29, 2012

My daughter's birthday is today~~Happy Birthday honey!
I have always made her a special cake. Every year I ask: "What kind of cake do you want?"  It's the rule in our family: Your birthday is your special day. Your favorite meal. Your favorite cake. Anything. This includes pie, cheesecake, whatever. The sky is the limit! Your birthday is your special day. My mom raised me this way. My Grandmother raised my mom this way. Your day, your way.

For my daughter's 1st birthday, my mom and I threw a big family party for her. I made a special tiny "baby" cake that she could eat all by herself. It was covered it with pink frosting roses (her namesake). So beautiful! The minute she saw it, she burst into tears. It took us 15 minutes to get her to stop crying and convince her to try some. It's also the LAST time I had to force her to try cake. Our family members are all confirmed cake-a-holics. It last throughout life.

When she was 9, I made a "Treasure Chest" cake filled with chocolate gold coins and rock candy "jewels". Pirate booty. Cake AND candy. Kid booty.

Her 1st year in college, she was 400 miles away. I couldn't conceive of my daughter being alone for the 1st time on her birthday with NO CAKE!, so I sent her a cake in the mail via USPS overnight express. Needless to say, it didn't arrive looking spectacular, but hopefully it was the thought that counted....

Last year she wanted key lime pie instead of cake. My key lime pie is good, but birthday cake is birthday cake. I ended up giving her birthday cake AND pie.

One of my biggest joys in life is baking for my loved ones. There is no too-much. But this year she has moved beyond the reach even of the USPS (At least for freshness...) She lives in the UK now, while I remain sadly behind in the States. And today is her birthday. For the 1st time since college, I couldn't bake her a cake as beautiful and sweet as her...

But flexibility and creativity is everything yes?

So.

Using her favorite color (green), I made her a tiny clay cake!

Swarovski pearls were added later to make it a purse charm.

She can't eat it, but she can wear it on her purse everyday and think of all the delicious cakes I've made for her in the past, and how much I love her!

Best of all, it's a 0 calorie cake!

But then, all cake eaten on your birthday is calorie free. Because whether you are 10 or 100, birthday's are always magical☆
